Need implants, an extraction or other complex dental care in Crouch End?

Many dental treatments require the involvement of an oral surgeon, including extractions, jaw treatments and dental implants. Our Crouch End oral surgeons have the skill and experience needed to perform your dental treatment to the highest standards.

The lowdown on oral surgery at Middle Lane Dental

  • Multi-disciplinary treatment. Oral surgery encompasses a variety of treatments including those offered by dentists, oral surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons, and focuses on the mouth, teeth, gums and jaw.

  • Routine surgery. Oral surgery doesn’t need to be complex, with dentists able to perform a surgical tooth extraction under local anesthetic.

  • Complex cases. Surgery can also include more complex treatments including surgery on the jaw and the placement of dental implants, for which specialist consultants and surgeons are called in to assist

  • Collaborative care. Whatever treatment you need, our dentists will collaborate with our oral and orthodontic specialists to ensure that you receive the highest levels of quality and care

Duration of treatment

  • This depends on the type of surgery being performed. An extraction can be performed in as little as 20 minutes, while implants usually take around an hour per implant. Your Middle Lane Dental dentist will be able to give you an estimation at the time of your consultation.

What do you need to know about oral surgery?

Oral surgery can relate to any surgical procedure involving the mouth, including the teeth, gums and jaw

Oral surgery can be used in a variety of different ways. Some of the most common oral surgery procedures that we perform include:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth: this is when a wisdom tooth fails to come through the gums properly, getting stuck and/or causing an infection to develop that results in swelling and severe toothache.

  • Dental implants: the most durable tooth replacement solution available, dental implants have an artificial root that is surgically implanted into the jawbone before the visible part of the restoration can be placed.

  • Jaw problems: the position of your jaw can result in uneven wear on your teeth, as well as stiffness and pain that is characteristic of a condition called temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD for short.

  • Facial injury: injuries can affect any part of the body, including the face. Our oral surgeons can repair injuries such as a fractured jaw.

Every oral surgery is different and based around the individual needs of each patient. This means that you will need to have a comprehensive consultation with our dental team, who will discuss your requirements and what surgical solutions will be used to address them. Oral surgery can be performed under local or general anesthetic where necessary, and while every effort will be made to treat you at our Crouch End dental practice, in some cases it may be necessary to have your procedure carried out in a hospital setting.

We understand that the prospect of oral surgery can be daunting, but our friendly and knowledgeable team are happy to answer any questions that you may have. For more information about oral surgery at Middle Lane Dental, please call our practice on 020 8348 1480.

Oral surgery in safe hands

Who will perform your oral surgery will depend on the type of procedure you need.

Lots of different dental treatments require an element of oral surgery. Who will perform your oral surgery at Middle Lane Dental will depend on the type of treatment you need. Routine procedures, such as general tooth extractions and simple wisdom tooth extractions, are nearly always carried out by our experienced and skilled general dentists. However, more complex treatments are entrusted to our dedicated team of specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeons. To become a specialist in their field, they’ve had to complete an additional four to six years of surgical training beyond their four years to qualify as a general dentist.

One of our specialists is Mr Simon Critchlow, who has been awarded the Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons, which is the highest dental surgery qualification available in the UK.

Let us calm your nerves

It’s not unusual for patients to feel nervous ahead of oral surgery, but our team can provide the reassurance you need.

At Middle Lane Dental, we pride ourselves on getting to know our patients, so chances are we'll know you are going to be nervous about your oral surgery before we even tell you that you need it! Fortunately, we are also dedicated to ensuring that our patients remain calm and comfortable during every visit to our practice, and our staff are fully trained to support those who feel anxious or nervous about the treatment ahead. If necessary, we may also be able to offer you sedation - drug-induced relaxation which can put you at ease for the duration of your procedure.

Prevention first

When you attend a routine dental exam, your dentist will automatically screen you for signs of oral cancer.

Oral cancer is more common than you might expect, but like all cancers, treatment is usually much more successful when the condition is diagnosed early on. Routine cancer screening performed during your normal oral exam will enable us to check for signs of the condition long before they produce any symptoms, helping us to keep you safe. If you have any unusual growths or abnormal areas inside your mouth, oral surgery may be needed to take samples for biopsy, or as a form of treatment. Your Middle Lane Dental dentist will be able to explain more.
