Commonly asked questions about your treatment journey

  • Are dental x-rays safe?

Modern x-rays use very low levels of radiation, making them a very safe and effective tool in the diagnosis and treatment of many dental problems. Your smile is in safe hands when you have diagnostic dental x-rays at Middle Lane Dental.

  • If a problem is detected, will it be treated the same day as my checkup appointment?

If your dental checkup reveals that you are experiencing a problem with your teeth or your oral health, a secondary appointment will be made for treatment. Your Middle Lane Dental treatment coordinator will be able to answer any questions that you have and will talk to you about financing options should you want/need them.

  • What can you do to support nervous patients?

Anxiety or fear about visiting the dentist is very common. Fortunately, all staff at Middle Lane Dental are trained to support and assist patients that are displaying signs of nervousness or fear. We work hard to create a calm, relaxing environment at every stage of your journey.

  • Does my check-up include a professional dental clean?

If you’d like to have your teeth cleaned during your check-up appointment, we strongly recommend that you request this in advance. However, if you forget it’s always possible to schedule a separate visit to our hygienist at a time that suits you.

Why dental checkups are important

At Middle Lane Dental, we recommend that you visit us for a dental check-up every 6 months.

This timescale allows your dental team the perfect frequency to monitor your oral health and means that we will notice any potential problems in the earliest stages when they are easier and more cost effective to treat.

Some patients may find that their dentist recommends attending for a check-up more often, perhaps every 3 months. This will be dependent on your unique oral health requirements. Your dentist will be able to explain the best frequency for you.

What to expect at your dental checkup

Knowing what to expect at your dental checkup can help to alleviate any worries or concerns that you have about your appointment.

Most dental checkups will begin with your Middle Lane Dental dentist taking x-rays of your teeth and asking if you have any concerns about your oral health. Next, they will assess the health and condition of your teeth and gums, as well as screening you for oral cancer. The results of these assessments will be used to advise you how healthy your teeth and mouth are, and whether you would benefit from any treatment. The good news is that we record the results of each appointment you have with us, so that these can be referred to at a later date if needed.

All patients are recommended to attend at least one dental appointment every year, but if you have been diagnosed with certain dental or medical conditions, you may be advised to attend more often. Follow the advice of your dentist.

Treating teeth grinding in Crouch End

Did you know that teeth grinding may be causing your chronic headaches? We can help!

Many patients suffer from tooth wear as a result of tooth grinding (bruxism), which is why we check for signs of this during every dental exam. Teeth grinding can happen for many different reasons, but it usually occurs during sleep, so most people have no idea they are even doing it.

If left untreated, teeth grinding can cause damage to the teeth and other side effects such as painful headaches and migraines, which disappear following treatment. The treatment for teeth grinding consists of wearing a splint while you sleep. These are made of a clear plastic that fits over the lower front teeth. They are small, and very comfortable to wear.

We use splits supplied by the experts at S4S Dental Laboratory, called Sleep Clench Inhibitor (Sci). The Sci can be fitted during your dental appointment, and the Sci+ is made in the dental laboratory. Your dentist will be able to explain the differences between the two and which would be the most appropriate splint for you.
