FAQs about dental veneers

  • Are dental veneers permanent?

This is a bit of a tricky question because while teeth that are covered with veneers will always need veneers, the actual coverings themselves probably won’t last forever and will need to be replaced at some point.

The reason that teeth that have had veneers will always need them is because a little of your natural tooth enamel needs to be removed as part of the preparation process. Since enamel can’t regenerate, if you ever have a veneer removed for any reason, it will need to be replaced.

  • How are dental veneers different from dental crowns?

Many people get dental veneers and crowns confused, but they are actually very different. A crown is used to cover the entire tooth, sitting over the top of it and covering it down to the gum line. It is both restorative and cosmetic, since it also restores the strength of the tooth. However, a veneer just covers the enamel on the front face of the tooth and is purely cosmetic in nature.

  • Does getting dental veneers hurt?

We need to remove a little of the natural enamel of the teeth so that your veneers will sit flush to them and not look abnormally thick or fake. We use local anesthetic to ensure that our patients don’t experience any discomfort while this happens, although you may feel a little pressure as the enamel is removed and while your veneers are fitted.

  • Don’t veneers look a bit fake?

As thin shell-like covers that sit over the outer enamel of the teeth, many people worry that veneers could look a little like fake teeth. However, modern veneers are created specifically for the individual needs of each patient and are created with the latest dental materials. When you choose to get veneers at Middle Lane Dental, impressions will be taken of your teeth and gums that will be used to create a mould. This will be sent to the renowned Luke Barnett dental laboratory where your veneers will be crafted with exquisite attention to detail and care, ensuring that they look just like natural teeth.

What are dental veneers and how do they work?

Often confused with crowns, dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite that are custom-crafted to cover teeth with minor imperfections

Dental veneers are often compared to fingernails, but despite their simple design, they are something of a work of art. This is because each individual veneer is created specifically for the tooth that it is to cover.

Our veneers are made either from porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain has the benefit of having a similar translucency to natural teeth, and is also stain resistant. With the right care, they can also last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. Our porcelain veneers are created using state of the art impressions which are then used in the design and crafting of your bespoke veneers.

Composite veneers are not crafted in a lab, but are instead applied directly to the teeth in the same way as the material is used to create white tooth fillings. Layers of composite are built up and skillfully shaped by our dentist, and once they are happy, will be hardened using a special curing light. Composite veneers are less expensive, but they also aren’t as stain resistant or long-lasting, with an average life of around 5 to 7 years.

What smile issues can veneers correct?

Versatility and veneers go hand in hand since they can correct many cosmetic issues including:

  • Teeth that are chipped or worn

  • Superficial cracks

  • Uneven spaces between teeth, especially that which occurs between the two upper teeth (called diastema)

  • Slight misalignment of the teeth

  • Teeth that are oversized, undersized or an irregular shape

  • Teeth that are stained or discoloured and the candidate is not a good candidate or irresponsive to tooth whitening
