Everything you ought to know about teeth whitening at Middle Lane

  • How white is it possible for my teeth to get?

At Middle Lane Dental, we use Enlighten teeth whitening. Enlighten is the only brand currently available in the UK that guarantees whitening to a minimum shade of B1, which is the lightest natural colour achievable, for approximately 98% of patients, irrespective of their age, diet and the current colour of their teeth.

  • Can I buy Enlighten for teeth whitening at home?

This whitening solution can’t be bought over the counter for use at home. Instead, all professional whitening treatments must be supervised by a dentist. This is because they contain high strengths of bleach which could otherwise damage the soft tissues of your mouth.

  • Will my dental restorations change colour too?

If you have veneers, crowns or fillings, these won’t be affected by the bleaching gel used in teeth whitening. This means that if they start off being discoloured or stained, this won’t change. Where possible, we recommend that you have teeth whitening completed ahead of any restorations. Alternatively, you could look at having your restorations replaced with newer, whiter alternatives.

  • Is teeth whitening safe?

Professional teeth whitening is considered extremely safe when it is supervised and/or performed by a trained and experienced dentist. This is because your teeth whitening dentist will assess your suitability for treatment at your consultation, and will only allow it to begin if it is safe to do so. For example, pregnant and breastfeeding women are recommended to wait before undergoing teeth whitening sessions.

  • Is teeth whitening painful?

Many people have concerns over whether dental treatments will hurt. Rest assured that when you choose Middle Lane Dental for your teeth whitening treatment, we will do everything possible to make sure that you remain comfortable throughout each appointment. This includes checking your teeth and mouth for any cavities or gum disease which could cause sensitivity or pain ahead of your whitening treatment.

Premium teeth whitening in Crouch End

Not all whitening is the same – we only use the best here at Middle Lane Dental

At Middle Lane Dental we only use products and techniques that guarantee results. This is why we use the Enlighten tooth whitening system for patients in Crouch End.

Our dental team have taken the time to test a variety of products available, which led us to understand that not all tooth whitening systems are equal. We found consistently excellent results with Enlighten, which is why we exclusively provide Enlighten Whitening here at Middle Lane Dental.

With Enlighten, we can guarantee that your smile will reach B1, which is the lightest naturally occurring tooth shade. The system also offers protection against tooth sensitivity, which can be a side effect with other brands of tooth whitening, and we noticed the result lasted much longer. We are so passionate about the effectiveness of this whitening system that we have been given the status of being an Enlighten Whitening Regional Centre of Excellence.

Non-vital whitening

Suffering with a discoloured or darker tooth? We have the answer for that!

Following a root canal procedure, it is very common for a tooth to darken. This happens because the tooth is classed as ‘non-vital’, which means the nerve inside has died. While this colour change has no effect on the function of the tooth, understandably many patients seek to lighten the shade to match the rest of their teeth.
We are pleased to offer non-vital tooth whitening, which is where we treat the single tooth by whitening it from the inside out.

Regular tooth whitening works by placing whitening gel on the outside of the tooth, however in these cases we apply the gel to the inside of the tooth, or the back of the tooth. This is a procedure that can only be carried out by your dentist during an in-practice appointment.

The results of non-vital whitening can usually be seen a few days after your appointment, and in some cases you may need multiple treatments to remove all of the darker colour. During your initial consultation your dentist will be able to explain how many sessions they expect you to require.

Teeth whitening: how does it work?

Getting whiter, brighter and more attractive teeth is easier than you think

Teeth whitening really is a simple process. It uses an active bleaching ingredient - usually either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide - to break down stain molecules into tiny, less concentrated pieces that are less visible to the naked eye. This process usually takes place over a series of appointments. Exactly how many will depend on how severely stained your teeth are, and how well they respond to the treatment. Although your teeth won’t ever become so white they look artificial, it is possible to lighten them by several shades or more, making them healthier, whiter, brighter and more attractive than before.

Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?

While teeth whitening is suitable for the majority of adults, your Middle Lane Dental dentist will thoroughly assess your candidacy before commencing treatment.

If you aren’t found to be suitable for teeth whitening, there are alternative options available, including veneers.

Reasons to whiten your teeth

Teeth naturally get darker with age, eating and lifestyle choices, and this can affect your confidence in your smile

There are many things that can cause teeth to change colour during the course of our lifetime. The most unavoidable is the aging process, which causes the centre layers of the teeth, called the dentin, to become darker. The enamel of the teeth also becomes thinner, and this makes darkening dentin even more obvious than before.

What we eat, drink and do can also impact the colour of our teeth. Foods and drinks like red wine, coffee, tea and curry can all stain the outer enamel, while smoking causes teeth to appear yellowed. The result can be a smile that we feel too self-conscious to share.

At Middle Lane Dental, we have a highly effective whitening solution; Enlighten, and our team will be delighted to discuss with you to help you decide if this is right for you. Unsurprisingly, in-office whitening produces the fastest and most consistent results. This is because it uses the highest strengths of bleach. At-home kits are also highly successful, but the lower strength bleach used means it can take a little longer to produce the same results. However, patients do benefit from the convenience of performing their treatment themselves at home.
